About Us

Herefordshire Expedition Group (HEG) is a voluntary organisation giving young people life-changing experiences in challenging environments. Founded in 2005 by Giles Smith and Andy Preedy, following their own expedition to Everest (Kala Patthar), HEG has been creating transformative opportunities ever since.

The first expedition in 2007, to Sabah, Malaysia, marked the 50th Anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Chosen for its cultural diversity, tough terrain and community needs, it set the tone for HEG’s mission: to give all young people in Herefordshire, regardless of background, the chance to take part.

Our History

What to expect from a HEG expedition

Our expeditions are built around four main objectives:

  • Physical challenge - pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone.

  • Cultural experience - immersing yourself in different traditions and lifestyles.

  • Giving back - volunteering and supporting local communities.

  • Conservation - helping protect the natural environment.

As part of the expedition journey, you will take part in fundraising activities, training events, and team-building sessions. Our leaders will support our young adventurers every step of the way, but commitment and enthusiasm are essential.
